Introduction

This qualification specification outlines key information required by candidates to ensure they are able to make an informed decision in regards to the qualifications they are undertaking.

Qualification purpose

This qualification is aimed at those looking to undertake the role of a first aider in the workplace, as outlined in the Health and Safety (First-aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982.

Unit one title

Emergency First aid in the Workplace


Pre-requisites

This qualification is aimed at those over 16 who are able to undertake the responsibilities associated with being

a workplace emergency first aider.

Candidates between 14-16 years can undertake the qualification, however they should not be relied upon by

employers to be a sole first aider.

It is recommended that candidates have a minimum of Level 2 literacy and numeracy or equivalent.


Course Content


A range of subjects are covered including:


  • Understanding the role and responsibilities of a first aider
  • How to manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally
  • How to manage a casualty who is in shock
  • How to assess an incident
  • How to recognise and assist a casualty who is choking
  • How to manage a casualty with a minor injury
  • How to manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally
  • How to manage a casualty with external bleeding
  • How to conduct a secondary survey
  • How to administer first aid to a casualty with burns and scalds
  • How to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected major illness
  • How to administer first aid to a casualty with injuries to bones, muscles and joints
  • How to administer first aid to a casualty with an eye injury
  • How to administer first aid to a casualty with suspected head and spinal injuries
  • How to administer first aid to a casualty with sudden poisoning
  • How to administer first aid to a casualty with suspected chest injuries
  • How to administer first aid to a casualty with anaphylaxis
